Writing Workshop - The Beautiful Beat
A Fiction Writing Workshop Exploring the Links Between Music and Words
Wednesday 16 July
Music and words are intertwined. All words – spoken or written, prose, drama or poetry – have their own rhythm. And everything we say contains pitch and melody (or discord). The roots of storytelling lie in song and chants.
In this workshop we’ll look at how musical concepts (rhythm, tone, and pitch) can be applied to fiction. We’ll explore the use of repetition and themes, and try using poetic techniques such as rhyme and assonance to make our prose melodious (or the opposite, if that’s what a piece requires). We’ll do some writing in response to music played on the day.
Music forms the backdrop to our lives. It’s present at every major occasion. Sometimes we feel we can’t get away from it. In the workshop we’ll also try writing narrative in which particular pieces of music play a major role. And we’ll attempt to capture in words the sensation of making music, both with instruments, and with that most fundamental tool, our own voices.
